Boann Distillery:
Boann is a family owned distillery, north of Dublin in Drogheda in the heart of the Boyne Valley. It was founded by Pat Cooney and his wife Maria, and the couple's four children are all involved in the business. Pat Cooney has made his money in the beer and water industry. Over a period of 40 years, he built up Ireland's largest distribution company (Gleeson Group) and via the sale of the business in 2012, he released a lot of funds, which he now e.g. has placed in whiskey production.
The distillery is brand new, and one of the finest distilleries in all of Ireland. In addition to the distillery, the Cooney family has also built a beautiful micro brewery, where some fantastic special beers are produced. The distillery also houses a visitor center and a small restaurant.
The myth of the goddess Boann
The distillery is named after the goddess Boann, who was married to Nechtan (king of the Bronze Age people). The goddess is said to have been responsible for a magical well in the area having gushed up so violently that it has thereby created the River Boyne. On that occasion, she herself should have perished after first losing an arm, a leg and then an eye. Boann has become a symbol of knowledge and creativity, and her name lives on in the River Boyne, which even today holds historical, mythical and spiritual significance in Irish culture.
Boann's Whistler
Since the Cooney family does not yet have whiskey from its own distillery to sell, they have bought a very large lot, including at the Cooley distillery before it was sold to Beam/Suntory. Much of this whiskey was completely freshly distilled, and subsequently the family has stored the whiskey in different types of casks to then be able to bottle a series of good quality whiskies. "The Whistler" refers to Pat Cooney's penchant for whistling, which he practices frequently. On the whole, the family is very musical, and there are many references to music on the equipment of the bottles.
