Wente Charles Wetmore Cabernet Sauvignon
Wente Charles Wetmore's wine is named after the man who imported Cabernet Sauvignon vines to California. These are vines that originally come from Margaux. Huge complexity and great intensity in this classic Cabernet Sauvignon.
Scent: Lots of dark cherries, chocolate and a little vanilla from barrel ageing.
Taste: Full-bodied in the mouth with dense ripe tannins and nicely integrated barrel ageing. Here there are notes of blackcurrant, blueberry and a bit of chocolate again. Great length and good balance in the aftertaste.
Serve to: The best meat, preferably beef or veal fillet.
Serving temperature: 16-18°C.
The wine:
The Cabernet Sauvignon Wetmore grapes are from the best plots on Wente's own fields. All the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes here are the original clones imported in the 19th century by Charles Wetmore. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are mixed with smaller amounts of Petite Sirah and Petite Verdot. These 2 grapes add increased color and concentration to the wine.
The grapes are harvested from several fields and vinified separately. During fermentation, the rack and return process is used, where all the must is drained from the fermentation tank to finally be poured over the grape skins again. This gives a deeper color, increased tannin extraction and ultimately a softer wine. The wine is aged for 20 months in oak before bottling on the property.
About the Vinhuset:
Founded more than 125 years ago, Wente is the oldest family-run wine company in California. Today, the winery is run by the fourth and fifth generations. The winery is located in the Livermore Valley, just east of San Francisco. In what is considered a first-class wine region. The family has always stood for traditional values, combined with new knowledge and their focus on quality was rewarded in 2011 when the renowned magazine Wine Enthusiast named the winery American Winery of the Year.
Wente's vineyards are located on old river beds that have dried up. Here there is a high concentration of minerals, which adds complexity to the wines. There are also fields that lie on old sandstone soil. The advantage of different types of soil is that you can make wines from different grapes. The Livermore Valley is located close to San Francisco Bay and is strongly influenced by the cool air that flows in at night from here. This cools down the grapes and warms them up during the day. Perfect for growing good grapes.
The Wente family have cultivated their own fields since the beginning in 1883 and have introduced their own Farming for the Future program to take the best possible care of their land. By taking care of the earth, both the local community and the entire planet are better off.
