Warre's Otima Colheita port 2013

Warre's Otima Colheita port 2013 is the grapes are aged individually in oak barrels before blending and bottling.

Jyllands-Posten 2023 – Test winner! 6/6 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️:
“Dry, elegant with a light burnt note. Rich, creamy in style, and if you can talk about English style in connection with a tawny, this is it.”

Scent: The deep dark caramel/amber color has delicate aromas with hints of roasted oriental spices, dates, orange peel and burnt almonds. The classic, elegant and charming style that is Warre's hallmark is immediately felt
Taste: Powerful with a creamy taste with notes of figs, raisins and vanilla from barrel aging with a long refreshing aftertaste.
Server for: Chocolate, Dessert, Cheese, Aperitif

After two very dry years, the winter of 2013 provided plenty of water for the earth's reservoirs. The spring was cool, which delayed flowering and shortened the ripening period. But a scorching hot and dry summer (4.6 mm of rain in June-July-August) made up for what it lost, and at harvest the grapes were very healthy despite the stressful heat. The big difference in 2013 came on September 5, when a day-long rainstorm hit the Douro Valley. It gave just the amount of water that was needed for the grapes to be fully ripe. The harvest started a little week later than usual, but the whole harvest took place in brilliant sunshine with lots of healthy grapes in perfect condition.

The grapes for Otima Colheita come from Warre's field plots at Quinta da Cavadinha in Pinhão. It is one of the best growing areas in the Douro Valley as well as Quinta do Retiro in the Rio Torto Valley. The port wine is made from Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Roriz, aged individually in casks before blending and bottling.

About Portvinshuset:

Warre's Logo

Founded in 1670, Warre's is the oldest of all British port wine houses. The company was, from the very beginning, pioneers in the production of port wine. At the beginning of the 18th century, they were the very first to establish their own wine cellars in Villa Nova de Gaia. A clear expression that Warre recognized the crucial importance of aging for the quality of good port wine early on.

When William Warre settled in Oporto in 1729, he was little aware that his descendants would devote themselves to the making of port wine for centuries to come – longer than any other British port family. William Warre soon came to play a prominent role in the port trade. In 1882, Scotsman Andrew James Symington arrived in Oporto, where he quickly entered into a partnership with Warre's, a partnership that continued until the 1960s, when Symington took over the company 100 %.

Warre's has some of the best vineyards and one of the Douro's most prestigious wine castles. Quinta da Cavadinha in the Pinhao river valley is the pride of Warre and one of the region's finest wineries.

Premium port wine

Warre's has long been known for its great Vintage Port wines. They are elegant in style and always with great finesse. They come from the Quinta da Cavadinha and Quinta do Bom Retiro Pequeno vineyards. The house also has a tradition of focusing heavily on premium port wine. Thus, 51 % of the house's sales can be characterized as premium. By comparison, the average volume of premium port from other houses is around 20 %.

Innovation

Otima 10 and 20 Year Old Tawny is a revolution in the port wine world. A new concept that helps to renovate port wine's image and reach new target groups. Not only in terms of design, this port has gained attention, it has also garnered medals and awards for its taste style.

Sustainable measures at Warre's

Warre's is part of the prestigious Symington Family Estates, which has been working on a sustainable strategy for years. The big and serious work resulted in 2019 with – as the first wine company in Portugal – a B Corp Certification. A certification where the individual members must live up to very high standards. But the work for Symington Familiy Estates does not stop here. A comprehensive sustainability strategy, MISSION 2025, was launched following the certification and aims to expand efforts towards the economic, social and environmental well-being of the regions where Symington Family Estates has facilities. Four teams have been set up that work specifically with: Viticulture & Biodiversity / Energy, Water & Buildings / Packaging & Waste and Local Communities.

Symington is also a member of International Wineries for Climate Action and Race to Zero, both of which work with e.g. minimizing the CO2 footprint.

The company thinks long-term, because the possibility of producing wine for many years to come depends on a stable climate and a healthy ecosystem. In addition to the many sustainable initiatives, the family has also set up a foundation, The Symington Impact Fund, which provides financial contributions to projects in the Douro Valley with a focus on community well-being and health, environmental projects and cultural initiatives.

In their sustainability program, they work with:

Environmental areas:

  • Minimize the use of pesticides
  • Minimize water consumption
  • Reduce energy consumption
  • Reduce CO2 emissions
  • Sort waste
  • Packaging – e.g. FSC certification
  • Increase biodiversity
