Von Oosten is an ancient bitter with a very characteristic and powerful taste. The creator, Simon Levy van Oosten, was born in 1799 in the Netherlands. In 1841 he moved himself and thus also the production to Hamburg. Here he changed van to the German von. SL von Oosten died at the advanced age of 79.
At the end of the 18th century, the bitters were imported on casks from Hamburg, bottled and sold by the wine and spirits wholesale company Emanuel Møller & Co., Copenhagen v/Michael Sejersen. On 9 October 1908, Emanuel Møller & Co together with Vinagenturfirmaet Marinus Møller & Co, Copenhagen v/William Beylegaard Herseth and Søren Engel bought the rights to the name and production for Denmark from merchant Eduard Zaun, Hamburg.
Manufacturing in Hamburg ceased during World War II and was never resumed. Denmark is therefore the only country that today manufactures the original Von Oosten Bitter - only adapted to the tastes of the time.
