Scapegrace Distillery
The still is an old John Dore Pot Still from the 19th century, made of copper and is 500 litres.
The bottle has been chosen very deliberately. These are the original Geneva bottles from the 15th and 16th centuries. Their bottle is a respectful acknowledgment of all that the first gin makers learned from them.
The story behind Scapegrace
Scapegrace originates from New Zealand, where two guys, who first got to know each other when one married the other's sister, started the company together. After a year sitting in bars and lounges discussing how they had always wanted to make their own gin, the dream became reality. Thus, the two brothers-in-law and a part-time musician ended up in a lot of debt, while creating a gin that won gold in London and San Francisco.
Scapegrace uses 12 botanical herbs from the wild, and at the same time uses water from New Zealand's Southern Alps for the distillation. Here, 80 years pass from the time it rains on top of the Alps to the boys from Scapegrace picking it up from the ground at the foot of the Alps. The water in New Zealand is quite unique due to the geography.
The rain that hits New Zealand comes in the same way as it did a thousand years ago. What comes through the clouds has not passed over the landmasses or been contaminated by car fumes or agricultural improvements. On the other hand, the first thing the clouds hit is a large crooked mountain range that runs along the south island. This mountain range holds water for 80 years. That's how long the journey takes through the layers of sediment until it is finally released into the depths of one of the world's last natural aquifers.
