PlumpJack Merlot 2022 Napa is an exquisite wine from two prominent vineyards in Napa Valley: Oak Knoll and Carneros. Oak Knoll, located in the foothills of the Mayacamas mountain range, contributes balanced structure and bright aromas, while Carneros, known for its cooler climate, adds an earthy character and depth to the wine.

The dry 2022 vintage received sufficient rain at the critical times, resulting in healthy growth and optimal grape development. The vines received warm spring conditions and alternating summer weather, leading to an early harvest after a heat wave. The vinification involved cold maceration for three to five days, followed by a fermentation that reached 90°F. After 10-12 days, the wine was pressed from the skins and transferred to oak barrels, where it underwent malolactic fermentation. 67% of the casks were new and 92% were French Bordeaux casks.

PlumpJack Estate Winery: From Humble Wine Shop to Napa Valley Icon

PlumpJack Estate Winery is one of Napa Valley's most recognized wineries, but its roots go back to a modest wine shop that opened in 1992 in the Fillmore neighborhood of San Francisco. This wine shop, known as PlumpJack Wines, was founded by Gavin Newsom and Gordon Getty. They had a vision to create a welcoming environment where people could learn about and buy wine in a relaxed atmosphere.

Five years later, in 1997, the PlumpJack Group took the next step by acquiring a historic 21-acre winery located on Oakville Cross Road in Napa Valley. This marked the birth of PlumpJack Estate Winery. The winery, which is over a hundred years old, has since developed into a pioneer in the Napa Valley wine industry.

One of the most notable accomplishments of PlumpJack Estate Winery is their pioneering decision to introduce screw caps as a closure method for fine wines. This move broke with the tradition of cork stoppers and signaled the winery's innovative spirit and willingness to challenge the status quo.

PlumpJack Estate Winery is part of the PlumpJack Group, which is run by partners Gavin Newsom, Gordon Getty and John Conover. In addition to PlumpJack Estate Winery, the group has also established two other wineries in Napa Valley: CADE Estate Winery and Odette Estate Winery. The name "PlumpJack" is inspired by Shakespeare's character Sir John Falstaff from the play Henry IV, a character who was referred to as "Plump Jack" by Queen Elizabeth. This name reflects the spirit of the vineyard. A balance between tradition and innovation, where winemaking is an art form that both pays tribute to the past and embraces the future.
