Plantation Trinidad 2003 is an elegant rum that has a nice sparkling orange color with hints of copper.
Plantation Trinidad has - like (almost) all Plantation rums - undergone "Double Aging". This means that it is first stored locally in the country of origin in a warm climate – and then stored again in a cooler climate. In the case of Plantation Trinidad, it has been aged for 8 years in Bourbon casks in Trinidad, and then for 4 years in cognac casks at Château de Bonbonnet in France.
As soon as the rum enters the glass, a wonderful and rather powerful aroma spreads. There are quite a few Trinidadian elements, but the spiciness is woven into a fruity sweetness. There are some bad notes - but everything is well balanced, giving a smooth experience to the nose.
Despite the positive experience in the aroma, it is in the taste that Plantation Trinidad 2003 is best. It's a wonderfully complex flavor – dry dried fruit, spice and austere vanilla – along with little whiffs of burnt oak. But everything is framed in a nicely balanced sweetness.
