More than 150 years have been dedicated to the production of port wine, with all the knowledge passed down from generation to generation. The Niepoort cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia are a magical space where port wines are aged at the speed of other times, where good traditions are maintained, where casks, bottles and demijohns are accompanied one by one, so that the final result is always good.
Fifth generation: Eduard Dirk Niepoort and Verena Niepoort. Dirk has run the company since Eduard Rudolph Niepoort's formal retirement in 2005. Dirk, born in 1964, discovered the world of wine during his studies in Switzerland. In 1987, Dirk joined his father, Rolf Niepoort, in the family business and was challenged to innovate while maintaining good traditions. The first important step was the acquisition of his own vineyards. Quinta de Napoli and Quinta do Carril in Cima Corgo, a region that traditionally produces the best port wines.
15 hectares of vines were replanted and 10 hectares of 60-year-old vines were carefully maintained. Owning estates and vineyards in the Douro was an important step in the production of port wine and in the creation of the first unfortified Niepoort wines. Dirk's passion for wines, the humble respect and curiosity for the Douro terroir have defined the spirit of Niepoort for the past two decades and are a constant inspiration for the team. Dirk's sister Verena joined the company as managing director in 2005.
