Niepoort Colheita 2009 is a Colheita that just doesn't disappoint, but one that just has to be enjoyed. Port wine in incredibly delicious balance. Better choices cannot be made for dried fruit, almond cake, nuts and cheeses or just as an aperitif.

The 2009 vintage was not easy, having been conditioned by the high temperatures experienced in August and September. This vintage made it possible for us to get wine of great quality and diversity.

Scent: delicious aroma of a little smoke in the vanilla that comes from the wine barrel, aromas of jam, prunes, raisins and dried apricots come.
Taste: Feels full with prunes, raisins and nuts with delicious sweetness.

In the 2008/2009 production year, the total rainfall was below the annual average between 1930 and 1960. The month with the greatest rainfall was January.

On the other hand, the observed average temperatures were generally the same as in the mentioned decades. However, the month of August was on average warmer by 2 °C compared to the average. This fact becomes even more important if we take into account that the first eleven days of the month were relatively cool compared to the normal in the region.

Colheita Port is selected port wine from a single unique vintage, developed for a minimum of 7 years in cask and ready to drink when it comes on the market. This type can withstand being left open for a long time without losing flavor. The port wine is composed of a wide variety of grapes, pressed and fermented in lagares. Aging took place in small (550 – 600 litres) oak casks until bottling in Niepoort's cellar.

Niepoort:

At Niepoort, the family has been in charge of operations for five generations, and today it is Eduard Dirk Niepoort who has taken over the helm. It has always been aimed at two generations working together in the company to preserve the spirit and style of the wine. For many years, Niepoort has been famous for their classic port wines, wines of high quality with great concentration and a long shelf life. Dirk Niepoort is a very charismatic winemaker who has his own ideas and points of view, and his main philosophy is that wines must have freshness to be interesting.

Niepoort port wine is produced from grapes that come from old vines in the Pinhão and Pisca valleys. The vines that Niepoort harvests from are more than 70 years old, and are planted in the best and most schist soil. The grapes are hand-picked in September and October, and are trodden by both men and women in lagares (low granite vats). The fermentation process is brought to an end by the addition of grape spirit, while the must still possesses large amounts of natural sweetness.
