About Mortlach:

Since 1896, all Mortlach whiskeys have been distilled 2.81 times. Unlike all other whiskies, Mortlach crosses between six copper cauldrons of different designs 0.81 times more than is traditional for Scotch whisky. It's very precise science with a touch of magic from "The Wee Witchie", which is the smallest of the six copper cauldrons. Ever since it was made more than 120 years ago, the producer has carefully ensured that every recess and detail remains unchanged because it is inside this copper cauldron that the specific richness of flavor that has made Mortlach known as "The Beast of Dufftown”, is created. Mortlach 12 years is dedicated to the copper cauldron, which contains the beast (The Beast). The whiskey is aged in both European and American oak casks to enhance the distinctive and robust character that makes Mortlach whiskeys legendary.

Mortlach was established in 1823 by James Findlater in the wake of the Excise Act on the site, for an older illegal distillery and was the first legal distillery in Dufftown. It was the only distillery in Dufftown until Glenfiddich was founded in 1887. Glenfiddich founder William Grant worked at the Mortlach distillery for 20 years prior to this.

At that time, production was approx. 50 liters per Week, it was generally sold straight from the stills in 9 or 10 gallon casks to the very few wealthy local gentlemen who could afford it. Delivery was usually by packhorse over the uneven hill tracks.

In the early years between 1823 and 1853, the distillery passed from owner to owner, at one point it was even a brewery. In 1853 engineer George Cowie, who had worked with Thomas Grainger and John Miller, joined John Gordon who owned the distillery.

In 1867 George Cowie became sole owner of the distillery. The Elgin Courant wrote in 1868 that there were no other distilleries in Scotland that had as many private customers as Mortlach. The whiskey spirit from there is not only sent across the three kingdoms to families from there, but to America, India, China and Australia. Cowie had customers who preferred his distillation to anyone else's.

Born in 1861, Alexander Mitchell Cowie studied medicine at the University of Aberdeen before moving to Vienna and then Hong Kong. In 1896, learning that his father was falling ill, Alexander returned to Dufftown and took control of the distillery. Working with distillery architect Charles C Doig, Mortlach was extended in 1897, the 2.81 still was put in place and the railway track, which became known as the 'Strathspey Line', linked it directly to Dufftown. The distillery also received electric lighting in 1898 – one of the first in the area. Alexander became chairman of the North of Scotland Malt Distillers Association.

In 1923 John Walker and Sons bought the distillery and much of its whiskey was used in their blends. In 2014, owner Diageo launched four luxury single malts under the Mortlach name.
