Montessu Isola Dei Nuraghi Punica, Sardegna (2021)

Montessu Isola Dei Nuraghi Punica is a wine created together with the renowned family behind Sassicaia. More specifically, Incisa della Rocchetta, which has thrown itself into an exciting Sardinian wine project. This wine offers a deep and juicy wine experience, where the vinous experience clearly emerges.

The wine presents a ripe and juicy fruit profile dominated by tones of blueberry, blackcurrant and undergrowth. This creates a taste experience that is a fascinating fusion of the fullness of the Bordeaux style and the Italian temperament. Montessu is thus characterized by its full and fruity character, which is rounded off with a mineral and slightly herbal finish.

The composition of grape varieties in Montessu further contributes to the complexity. With 60% Carignano, 10% each of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah, the wine creates a harmonious balance between these different varieties. The cultivation of Carignano on sandy fields near the coast takes advantage of the sunny Sardinian climate for optimal ripening. On the other hand, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah are grown in the heights inside the island. Which results in more robust and powerful grapes.

Montessu achieves its unique character not only through the grape blend, but also by combining grapes from different geographical locations on the island. This creates a result where the whole is far more impressive than the sum of the individual components. Montessu is therefore not just a mixture of grapes, but a perfect symbiosis between grape varieties and the Sardinian terroir, which is reflected in the wine's complexity and character.

About the Vinhuset

Agricola Punica, founded in 2002 in Sardinia, represents a pioneering collaboration between significant wine personalities. Like Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta (creator of Italy's famous Sassicaia), Sebastiano Rosa, Cantina Santadi, and winemaking icon Giacomo Tachis. The goal of this project is nothing less than to create Sardinia's first world-class wine. Taking unconventional steps, Agricola Punica has overcome the challenges of Sardinia's intense heat by growing grapes on the cool slopes of the island, giving the wines the desired freshness and elegance.

Owner Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta, inspired by the success of Sassicaia, leads the project. A project that has received recognition, ranking on Wine Spectator's “100 Top Italian Wineries” and impressive ratings from critics such as Suckling (95P). The winery, named Punica as a tribute to the Phoenicians who brought the Carignan grape to the island. Produces two notable wines: Barrua, dominated by old Carignan vines as well as Cabernet and Merlot, and Montessu, a blend of Carignan, Syrah, Cabernet and Merlot. Barrua has particularly impressed the international wine press and has achieved 3 glasses in Gambero Rosso, the Italian wine bible, twice since its inception in 2002. Agricola Punica is steadfast in its goal of putting Sardinia on the world map for fine wine production.
