LBV 2015 from Martinez is a good example of a juicy and fruity port, it can be drunk now with great pleasure.
Port wine with the designation LBV – Late Bottled Vintage is a type of port wine which has many of the qualities of the vintage type, but which is ready to drink right from the time of bottling. As the name suggests, it is a late-bottled vintage – that is, after 4-6 years of cask aging, rather than the usual 2-3 years.
Martinez was founded around the year 1790 by cigar, sherry and port merchant Sebastian Gonzales Martinez. In 1822 he teamed up with the Englishman John Gassiot. By the time Sebastian Martinez retired in 1849, Martinez had become the most important shipper of port to Great Britain. At the beginning of the 20th century, however, the port industry began to decline, and it was decided to list the company on the stock exchange. In the 1960s, the company was bought by John Harvey, who shortly afterwards also bought Cockburn's – Martinez's biggest rival at the time. Martinez was also very successful on the keg market until the mid-1990s, when, among other things, Juuls Vinhandel bottled port wine from Martinez under names such as "Captain's Dream" and "Imperial Old Tawny".
Today, Martinez is owned by the Symington family, who for a number of years have worked hard to revive Martinez's reputation as one of the absolute best and most important port wine houses.
