Laphroaig Quarter Cask Islay Single Malt 48%
Laphroaig Quarter Cask is a Scottish single malt whiskey of 48% from one of Islay's most iconic distilleries.
Scent: Smoldering fire with citrus, with light coconut and vanilla in the background.
Taste: Soft and sweet malt notes come immediately with lots of smoke and salty notes with hints of seaweed. Can easily tolerate a few drops of water.
Whisky:
Laphroaig Quarter Cask contains an irresistible doubling of taste, because it has been aged twice in American oak casks. Midway through the aging phase, the whiskey is transferred from Laphroaig's standard ex-bourbon casks to quarter casks and finished storing in them in Laphroaig's warehouses a stone's throw from the Atlantic coast. The process symbolizes how Laphroaig breathes new life into an ancient tradition: Namely the use of smaller casks, which ensures increased contact with the oak and thus complements Laphroaig's distinctive peat notes with a velvety edge.
Laphroaig is one of Islay's most iconic whiskies. The strong taste of iodine, seaweed, tar and peat probably deters as many as it excites, and Laphroaig has always prided itself on being a polarizing whisky, an "acquired taste" that no one learns to like. But those who do swear by it.
The legend:
According to legend, Laphroaig is one of the only whiskeys still allowed to be sold during Prohibition in the USA: distillery manager Ian Hunter had managed to convince US Customs that Laphroaig's strong notes of iodine and seaweed had medicinal properties! Perhaps they thought that no one would drink something so bizarre without a good reason.
Laphroaig was thus already available as a single malt in the 1920s, and today it is Islay's best-selling single malt. The distillery was founded in 1815. With its 7 boilers, the capacity is up to 3.3 million liters of pure alcohol per year, and there is talk of expanding, because currently production is non-stop.
