Kilkerran 12 years (2021) 46%

This Kilkerran 12 year old (2021) is a lightly peated single malt that has undergone a double distillation and then a 70% maturation in ex-bourbon casks and 30% in ex-sherry casks. It has not been cold-filtered and has not undergone artificial coloring. Is bottled at 46% alcohol.

Scent: Here, dried fruits, cherries, marzipan, notes of peat together with oak emerge.
Taste: Fruits with notes of citrus, orange peel, vanilla, cream caramels and honey in beautiful harmony.
Aftertaste: Stays long with a velvety and smooth taste of lemon and meringue.

About the Distillery

Campbeltown was once the whiskey capital of Scotland with more than 30 legal distilleries towards the end of the 19th century. However, like many other distilleries, Glengyle had to surrender due to the disastrous economic conditions in the wake of the First World War. Prohibition of spirits in the United States contributed to a worsening of the crisis, and by 1934 there were only two distilleries left in Campbeltown – Glen Scotia and Springbank.

Since the closure in 1925, there have been two attempts to restart Glengyle. In 1941 and again in 1957, but without success.

In 2000, Hedley Wright, who also owns Springbank, managed to purchase the buildings with the aim of re-establishing the distillery. It took four years to find the necessary equipment and to have the buildings renovated. Some of the distillery's equipment is new, while some has been acquired from partly Craigellachie and partly the closed highland distillery Ben Wyvis, which operated in the period from 1965-77 at the grain distillery Invergordon.

The distillery was originally named Glengyle, but unfortunately it is not currently possible to bottle the whiskey under the distillery's name. There is already a blend with the same name, which is why the name Kilkerran was chosen as the name for the whiskey from Glengyle.

Production started in March 2004, when the first alcohol flowed from the boilers, after the completion of the distillery's renovation. In the first four years, the distillery produced 50,000 liters annually. Subsequently, production has been reduced to around 20,000 liters annually. The whiskey is produced completely traditionally. The building's floor is plastered at Springbank. Germination is stopped by drying with peat for 6 hours and then another 30 hours with hot air. This gives a phenol content of 15ppm in the malted barley. The distillation process is double distillation, and the finished "new make" is filled into the casks at 68%. The casks are stored in Campbeltown at sister distillery Springbank.
