Graham's 2019 Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Port is an impressive Port known for its intensity and balance. The deep ruby red color accompanies a wide range of flavors ranging from ripe berries such as blackberries and blackcurrants to subtle spices and dark fruits. The wine is made from the classic grapes Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Alicante Bouschet and Tinta Amarela. And its structured, concentrated nature makes it suitable for long-term storage.
Quinta do Vesuvio has a rich history dating back to 1565 and is today owned by the Symington family, who also own renowned port wine producers such as Graham's and Dow. The vinification of the 2019 vintage takes place in the traditional way, with foot stomping of the grapes, which are then fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged for two years in oak barrels.
The reviewers agree that this port is one of the best of the year. With Wine Spectator awarding it 96 points for its great fruit character and finesse, while Wine Enthusiast praises it for its concentration and structure. This is a port that can be enjoyed now, but will also reward those who choose to age it for many years to come.
About Quinta do Vesuvio
Quinta do Vesuvio is one of the most respected properties in the Douro Valley, with a history that can be traced back to 1565. The Symington family took over the property in 1989 and have since continued the proud traditions of producing high-class port wines. Quinta do Vesuvio is particularly noted for its classification as an A-class vineyard, and the grapes grown here range from young to older vines. Which gives the wines a unique complexity and depth.
About Portvinshuset:
The company only traded in textile goods until 1820. Then a customer could not pay his overdue bill to the company's branch in Porto. They were therefore forced to accept 27 pipes of port wine as payment. The port was sold with great success and was encouraged to repeat the trade. The company quickly built up a good reputation within port wine.
At the end of the 19th century, Graham's was one of the largest shippers and most recognized port wines. Young Scotsman Andrew James Symington was employed by the company in 1882 and after a few years he moved on to the world of port wine. In 1970 Graham's had financial problems and had to add capital. Then Symington's grandchildren took the opportunity to buy the house.
The Symington family today has a very central position within the world of port wine and owns some of the best port wine houses. Today, it is the 5th generation that manages their port wine houses.
Robert Parker also had the following comment on Graham's: The most consistent producer of great port in the post world war 2 era.
