The place:
Chateau Caronne Ste Gemme is located a very old "place called" "Carona" would come from the Gallic "little spring". As for Sainte-Gemme, it is the linguistic development of Saint Jaime or James, like that appears from the maps from the 18th century.
This parish was, in fact, on one of the branches of the road to Santiago de Compostela, which the Knights Templar installed in the nearby village of Benon provided security and facilitated the crossing of the river by pilgrims at Saint James. It was suppressed during the revolution and attached to the municipality of St. Laurent.
Wine production beginning:
The first written records of wine production date back to 1648, when the owner, Denys de Mullet de la Tour St Lambert, granted a lease to a farmer for payment in "vins de Caronne." The property was bought in 1900 by Emile Borie, grandfather of Jean Nony-Borie, who has managed it since 1943 with now his nephew François Nony, with a view to inheritance.
Château Caronne Saint Gemme is located in St. Laurent and is a direct neighbor to the classified castles Château Gruaud Larose, Château Lagrange, Château Belgrave and Château Camensac. The fields cover an area of 45 hectares, which is predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and a third Merlot and approx. 5% Petit Verdot.
The wine production itself largely follows the same pattern as the larger estates. The aging of the wine takes place in traditional 225 liter casks of French oak for a period of 12 months. Of these, around 25% are brand new barrels. The bottling takes place approx. 20 months after harvest.
Château Caronne Saint Gemme was classified as "Cru Bourgeois Supérieur" in 1932 and as "Cru Bourgeois Exeptionnel" at the revision.
