Caroni 23 years 1998-2021 at 55.4 % is equipped with an extra touch of complexity. The Caronia is, as always, very tarry and full of heavy tannins. This comes from hard tropical storage in the early years. After this, the last 7 years are transferred to an ex-sherry whiskey cask, and the rum finishes its aging in the European climate. This has resulted in a dark and extreme rum, full of licorice notes, aniseed, coffee, but also of light fruit notes, cookies and raisins.
Released in a small batch of only 860 bottles.
Scent: Rich scent of slightly spicy sweetness. Impossible to guess as Caroni, but as you sniff more and more the light notes of "diesel" that accompany certain Caroni appear. There are gradually notes of chocolate, both light and dark. A slight hint of Virginia tobacco lies at the very back. Good balance throughout.
Taste: Completely surprisingly sweet in taste as the first, soft and full with a light bitterness that slowly penetrates into the background. Very soft vanilla wreath flavor known from Scotch whiskey comes to the surface. As time goes on, more and more are coming. Quite a complex room
Aftertaste: Long soft and sweet with vanilla and caramel as dominant and only a very weak and acceptable "Caroni" "diesel" note at the end.
