Black whiskey from Speyside Distillery is first aged in American oak and finished in hard-fired port casks, casks called Black Ruby Casks by the Scots. It is the last aging process which gives lots of sweetness and bitter substances.
A man's dream, former submarine captain George Christie in 1956 bought a small plot of land in Drumguish on Kingussie at the southern end of Speyside, where he wanted to build a small distillery, which took 4 years to start construction and a further 25 years before it was completed finished building. It was the start of distillery SPEY,
Today it is owned by Harvey s of Edinburg and stands as one of Scotland's most beautiful and romantic distilleries.
There is only one still, so the annual production is only 600,000 litres.
