Ardbeg BizarreBQ Single Malt Limited Edition 50.9%

How did the idea for BizarreBQ from Ardbeg come about? Well you start with a crazy idea, you bring together three unique barrels, two masters in their own field, and a whole lot of heat and smoke… what do you get? You get the Distillery's very first whiskey inspired by barbecue - Ardbeg BizarreBQ. It was developed by the famous Master Distiller, Dr. Bill Lumsden, along with the real barbecue master, Christian Stevenson (also known as DJ BBQ). This mouth-watering malt offers a meaty, smoky flavor. (Watch the humorous video below where Dr. Bill Lumsden and Christian Stevenson introduce this amazing Limited Edition Whisky)

Scent: Charcoal and soot are mixed with smoked wood and aromatic herbs and spices. Syrupy toffee, smoked ham and cinnamon-dusted espresso rise.
(A splash of water releases characteristic sharp citrus aromas along with herbal notes like fennel and anise. Grilled artichokes and a hint of well-done meat sizzle the senses. The undeniable smell of campfires and BBQ embers hangs in the background.)
Taste: Feels alive with spice, like BBQ ribs smothered in chilli. A myriad of deep, warming smoke follows closely behind in flame-grilled steak, chilli oil, salted leather and cloves. Ginger, anise and tar crackle on the palate with an aromatic wood smoke edge.
Aftertaste: Massive, warm aftertaste goes on and on with more grilled artichoke, black olives and a sooty note that slowly simmers away.

As with grilling, there is a crucial element in the creation of our first BBQ-inspired malt – fire. By roasting a blend of three barrels – double fired oak barrels, Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and BBQ barrels – this combined recipe comes together to create a sweet, spicy and smoky flavor… perfect for BBQ!

About the Distillery

Over the years, Ardbeg has experienced many ups and downs on its long journey, shaping it into the iconic distillery it is today. Ardbeg's story is an inspiring tale of unwavering willpower that has overcome all odds.

The distillery has impressed the whiskey world by winning the World Whiskey Of The Year award four times in recent years. Which proves its exceptional quality and proud traditions as one of the best examples of whiskey from the Scottish island of Islay.

The story of Ardbeg began in 1815 when founder John Macdougall established the distillery as a legal commercial enterprise after obtaining a licence. By 1887 the distillery was already producing an impressive 1.1 million liters of whiskey a year and was the most productive distillery on Islay at the time. But fortunes turned and in 1981 Ardbeg had to close, resulting in the loss of 18 jobs, a tough time for the island of Islay.

In 1987, Ardbeg was sold and resumed distilling, but things did not quite go according to plan and the distillery had to close for the second time in 1991. It was not until 1997 that it reopened when The Glenmorangie Company, again part of Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton ( LVMH); bought it and started investing in both equipment and personnel. These investments bore fruit, and in 1999 production again reached 600,000 liters per year.

It was a fantastic development and in 2008 Ardbeg won the title of 'World Whiskey Of The Year' for their 'Ardbeg Ten Years Old'. An achievement that was repeated the following year when Ardbeg won with their 'Uigedal'. The following year they were honored with the title of 'Supernova'.

Ardbeg's unique characteristic is the perfect balance between the characteristic smoky strength and subtle floral sweetness, making the whiskey a true core expression of the distillery.
