Ardbeg An Oa
Wonderfully round and smoky - as you know from Ardbeg. Here are impressions of burnt apple wood, caramel cream, syrup, dates and anise, peach and banana. With a little water, additional notes of fennel, lime and tar emerge, along with salty hints of the proximity of the sea on Islay. Soft and slightly fatty on the tongue with great sweetness, chocolate, caramel, oranges, tea leaves and anise, cinnamon and nutmeg.
The smoke also comes here in the form of cigar smoke and grilled artichokes. You also sense oak before a long finish with a touch of flowers, biscuits, mint and caramel.
About the Distillery
Over the years, Ardbeg has experienced many ups and downs on its long journey, shaping it into the iconic distillery it is today. Ardbeg's story is an inspiring tale of unwavering willpower that has overcome all odds.
The distillery has impressed the whiskey world by winning the World Whiskey Of The Year award four times in recent years. Which proves its exceptional quality and proud traditions as one of the best examples of whiskey from the Scottish island of Islay.
The story of Ardbeg began in 1815 when founder John Macdougall established the distillery as a legal commercial enterprise after obtaining a licence. In 1887, the distillery was already producing an impressive 1.1 million liters of whiskey per year. And was the most prolific distillery on Islay at the time. But fortunes turned and in 1981 Ardbeg had to close, resulting in the loss of 18 jobs, a tough time for the island of Islay.
In 1987, Ardbeg was sold and resumed distilling, but things didn't quite go according to plan and the distillery had to close for the second time in 1991. It wasn't until 1997 that it reopened when The Glenmorangie Company. There again is part of Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH) bought it and started investing in both equipment and staff. These investments bore fruit, and in 1999 production again reached 600,000 liters per year.
It was a fantastic development and in 2008 Ardbeg won the title of 'World Whiskey Of The Year' for their 'Ardbeg Ten Years Old'. An achievement that was repeated the following year when Ardbeg won with their 'Uigedal'. The following year they were honored with the title of 'Supernova'.
Ardbeg's unique characteristic is the perfect balance between the characteristic smoky strength. And subtle floral sweetness, making the whiskey a true core expression of the distillery.
